The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk recently worked with Controlled Air, inc, to improve their energy efficiency and reliability, we installed a Tedom CHP unit.

Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems offer significant benefits for aquariums, addressing their substantial and continuous energy demands for maintaining precise environmental conditions. Here are the key advantages:

High Energy Efficiency: Aquariums require consistent heating, cooling, and electricity for life support systems (pumps, filters, lighting). Traditional methods often waste a significant amount of heat during electricity generation. CHP systems, by producing both electricity and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source, can achieve overall efficiencies of 65% to 80%.

Reduced Operating Costs: Due to their high efficiency, CHP systems require less fuel to produce the same amount of energy (electricity and heat). This directly translates to lower energy bills and can lead to substantial cost savings, potentially offsetting energy expenses by 20% to 50%.

Enhanced Reliability and Resiliency: Maintaining stable water temperatures and continuous power for pumps and filtration is critical for the health and survival of aquatic life. CHP systems provide on-site generation, which means aquariums can operate independently or in parallel with the grid. This enhances energy reliability and resiliency, ensuring critical functions continue even during grid outages or disruptions, protecting valuable marine specimens.

Environmental Benefits: By maximizing the use of fuel and avoiding transmission and distribution losses associated with grid electricity, CHP systems reduce overall fuel consumption. This leads to a significant decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as other air pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), contributing to decarbonization efforts.

Fascia’s Chocolates is a family owned chocolate company located in Waterbury CT. They have been in existence since 1964 and have been winners of multiple awards. As they have grown and their energy demands have increased they decided to make improvements to their existing facility.

Advanced Energy Efficiencies and Controlled Air Inc. worked together to create a high efficiency system using YANMAR gas powered GHP. Prior to installation calculations were done to determine the best system and estimated energy savings. After 7 months running the system has performed even better than expected. Check back soon for more information.

30th Anniversary Celebration

We’re thrilled to be able to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in celebrating the 30th anniversary of @EPA’s first voluntary climate initiative, Green Lights. #30climate

30 years ago, @EPA launched its first voluntary climate partnership program: Green Lights. Today, we are one among tens of thousands of organizations that are voluntarily reducing emissions by partnering with EPA. #30climate Learn more: epa.gov/30climate

Facts and Figures

We’ve been proud to be an ENERGY STAR climate partner since 2012. In 2019, we and tens of thousands of other organizations voluntarily cut 530 million metric tons of GHGs—equal to 8% of all U.S. GHG emissions that year! #30climate Learn more: epa.gov/30climate

EPA partnership programs such as ENERGY STAR, GreenChill, SmartWay, and others have helped American families and businesses save $500 billion over the past 30 years. #30climate Learn more: epa.gov/30climate

In 2019, more than 800,000 Americans were employed in manufacturing or installing ENERGY STAR certified equipment—accounting for roughly 35% of all energy efficiency jobs. #30climate Learn more: epa.gov/30climate

EPA’s Green Power Partners account for nearly 40% of the total voluntary green power market, which itself was nearly as large in 2019 as new, non-hydro demand from renewable portfolio standards. #30climate Learn more: epa.gov/30climate

Supporting Statements

We are committed to tackling the climate crisis and leading the way to a clean energy economy. #30climate
Through our partnership with @EPA, we’re delivering real climate solutions that makes good business sense. #30climate
The work that we do in partnership with @EPA results in smart solutions that not only strengthen our business but improve the lives of people and the health of our planet. #30climate

CPACE not only can help fund larger million dollar projects, but can also help you upgrade and perform fuel switches on boilers.

CPACE allows for no out of pocket expenses. They provide 100% financing. The main requirement is that the cost savings must pay for the project. If the project cost is $1000, then the savings must be at least $1001. This can easily be accomplished if you are upgrading an inefficient boiler.

We have all the paperwork required to apply and can help walk you through the process. The application requires at least 14 months of utilities to use for comparison for the new equipment.

We received a very exciting letter and certificate from EPA’s CHP Partnership

Vincent Chiocchio
Controlled Air, Inc.
21 A Thompson Rd
Branford, CT 06405
Dear Vincent,

On behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Combined Heat and Power Partnership, I am pleased to provide you with your organization’s 2013 Certificate of Avoided GHG Emissions. The certificate documents the estimated carbon dioxide emissions avoided in 2013 by the CHP projects for which you provided data, expressed in metric tons and the equivalent emissions from electricity use by U.S. homes. This estimate is calculated by comparing the emissions from each CHP system to the total emissions from conventional separate heat and power (i.e., grid electricity and on-site thermal generation).

The certificate also includes the cumulative carbon emissions avoided by the CHP projects you have reported. The certificate can be a valuable resource for communicating the environmental benefits of CHP to your customers, your stakeholders, and the public.

If you have any questions regarding the 2013 Certificate of Avoided GHG Emissions or any of our tools and resources available at www.epa.gov/chp, please do not hesitate to contact the CHP Partnership at (703) 373-8108.

Congratulations on your achievement in reducing carbon pollution in the United States.
Sincerely,

Susan Wickwire
Chief, Energy Supply and Industry Branch
Climate Protection Partnerships Division
