We want to remind everyone that the Gas Heat Pump (GHP) systems manufactured by Yanmar qualify for the 30% tax credit, as well as for direct payments to tax-exempt entities, under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This tax benefit only applies to systems installed by December 31, 2024. Due to equipment timing and scheduling we highly recommend that you start the ordering and installation process immediately in order to complete installation by the December deadline. The project must be installed under specific requirements and may require prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements depending on the size of the project and other specific considerations.

Yanmar GHP is considered a mechanical cogeneration product and should be treated as “Combined Heat and Power system property” (CHP) for purposes of Internal Revenue Code Section 48, under the Investment Tax Credit (ITC).

Please consult with your tax professional for additional requirements, information and to verify your qualifications.

GHP is a great solution for upgrading HVAC systems in historical buildings with older electrical systems, minimal electrical load, or where there isn’t the opportunity to upgrade the electrical system for newer high-efficiency traditional HVAC systems. Gas systems require less electricity therefore sometimes making it the best option for converting older buildings. Additionally, they are perfect when only single-phase power is available or when electrical systems can’t be updated due to delays, cost, or availability.

In calculations, the Gas Heat pump systems saved 25-30% on cooling and 50% on heating as compared to an electric heat pump system.

Don’t hesitate to call or email for more information about GHP or a custom energy solution for your facility. We are always happy to do a walk-through of your facility and make suggestions on the more efficient way to upgrade your HVAC. Download Our GHP Flyer

We are excited to share that we have confirmed the Gas Heat Pump (GHP) systems manufactured by Yanmar qualifies for the 30% tax credit, as well as for direct payments to tax exempt entities, under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Yanmar GHP is considered a mechanical cogeneration product and should be treated as “Combined Heat and Power system property” (CHP) for purposes of Internal Revenue Code Section 48, under the Investment Tax Credit (ITC).

As part of the new provisions adopted, the IRA imposed additional requirements to receive the 30% tax credit. The project must be installed under specific requirements and may require prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements depending on the size of the project and other specific considerations.

These systems must be installed between January 1st 2023 and December 31st 2024. Please consult with your tax professional for additional requirements, information and to verify your qualification.

Gas Heat Pumps (GHP)/VRF

GHP’s, also sometimes referred to as VRF’s, are highly advanced mechanical units, concurrently producing mechanical power and thermal energy that provide heating and cooling. The natural gas heat pumps provided an electrical load reduction of approximately 30% and an 80% carbon emission reduction as compared to electric heat pumps powered by the grid.

Benefits

The benefit of a heat recovery system is that it allows for simultaneous heating and cooling by absorbing excess heat energy in one zone and transferring it to heat another. This helps provide comfort while operating at maximum efficiency. The heat recovery system allows for localized comfort with independent temperature control. Every occupant can enjoy a perfectly heated, cooled, and dehumidified area. VRF is a flexible system in operation and installation. Multiple configurations of indoor units are available, including wall and floor mounts.

We perform energy audits for most of our customers. It gives us information about energy usage, savings, and the potential for rebates and incentives. Our audits begin with a Level 1 Energy Audit/Pre-Audit. The pre-audit Identifies the potential for improvement and conceptual approaches for closing the gap from a low performing building to a high performance building.

Step 1: Survey and evaluates the energy usage in a building through:

Talking to occupants and building managers

Collect drawings and building information

Collect All Utility Bills – Minimum of one year

Equipment

HVAC, Controls, Data Loggers and Flow/BTU Meters

Usage/hours of operation and Occupancy

Step 2: Preliminary Analysis

Review large energy uses

Compare to standard database the dollar per square foot energy use

Comparison to other Like facilities

Benchmarking (Energy star and ASHRAE)

Analyze heating and cooling practices and identify inefficiencies

Identify possible cost saving measures and energy saving opportunities

Sep 3: Initial Planning and Ideas for a Capital Improvement

Identify opportunities with best ROI

Plan equipment replacement with High Efficiency options

Demand limiting EMS system that also tacks and monitors energy such as lighting, process or HVAC loads.

Identify large and fast payback opportunities (1-5 yrs)

Identify longer term payback opportunities

Identify possible rebate and incentive opportunities

Step 4: Discuss Common Potential Upgrades:

Energy Management Systems

Cogeneration System

Gas fired chiller for HVAC and ice making equipment.

Separate Suite HVAC from main chiller plant.

Economizers for central heating plant

Use cogeneration or separate generation system to handle peak demands

Improve heat recover opportunities

Maximize the use of the desiccant dehumidifiers.

Review:

What makes sense

Agree on direction or plan

Move on to more detailed analysis

Computer Energy Modeling of Building

Level II Energy Audit

Prioritize solutions and energy saving measures

The Long Wharf Theater received over $24,000 in utility incentives from CL&P for being more efficient than required by code. Controlled Air, Inc. provided them with economical solution through custom design build, saving them well over $1mil from their original budget. Seven roof top units were installed: Three AAON single VAV variable speed units and four efficient Johnson Controls units. The RTU’s were connected to a CO2 detection system that allows them to limit the outside air intake to only what is necessary, saving money and energy. Noise was also a concern for our customer and as such, we worked directly with acoustical engineers to ensure that the air distribution system and equipment ran with the lowest level of noise possible.
Controlled Air, Inc. will be part of the team presented with the “Excellence In Construction Award” at a ceremony held on January 30, 2014.

The total funding remaining in the program for all selected projects under this competitive solicitation is $5 million dollars. This program will offer support for projects that are below five megawatts.

However, funding will not exceed the equivalent of $450 per kilowatt of nameplate rated capacity. Financial support is intended to help you achieve a fair and reasonable payback and return on investment during the life of the project compared to purchasing the equivalent amount of power, fuel oil and/or gas from your utility. If you are interesting in installing cogeneration, this funding will offer incentives that will help pay for the installation.

This is just a quick summary of some funding available in energy efficiency for both large scale and small scale projects:

C-PACE

Connecticut Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) is an innovative program that is helping commercial, industrial and multi-family property owners access affordable, long-term financing for smart energy upgrades to their buildings.

C-PACE allows building owners to finance qualifying energy efficiency and clean energy improvements through placing a voluntary assessment on their property tax bill. Property owners pay for the improvements over time through this additional charge on their property tax bill and the repayment obligation transfers automatically to the next owner if the property is sold. Similar to a sewer tax assessment, capital provided under the C-PACE program is secured by a lien on the property, so low-interest capital can be raised from the private sector with no government financing required.

Commercial Solar Hot Water RFP, Incentives and Financing

The Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority offers incentives, through designated participating contractors, to any customer of Connecticut Light & Power or The United Illuminating Company who wishes to install solar hot water systems. Click here for the incentive process guidelines.

CEFIA is providing incentives and financing to support Commercial Solar Hot Water projects through a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. This is the fifth round and final round of solicitations under the current program launched in April 2012. The “funds available” (below) reflect changes in project awards from previous rounds.
Read More About Solar Thermal Incentives

Federal Tax Relief

Extension of renewable energy incentives, the R&E tax credit and other business incentives: The agreement extends tax relief for businesses through the end of next year. This means extending the Production Tax Credit, a key incentive for renewable energy , as well as the Research & Experimentation tax credit. In addition, the agreement extends 50 percent bonus depreciation, a cost-effective temporary measure to support investment and growth. All of these would be extended through the end of 2013.

SunShot Incubator Program (Round 8)

Funding: Up to $12M Total
Close Date: 04/30/2013
Funding Organization: SunShot Initiative
Funding Number: DE-FOA-0000838

Summary:

The SunShot Incubator Program is an aggressive pay for performance program focused on helping solar startups rapidly refine and commercialize promising, proven technologies and ideas. The program seeks to accelerate the commercialization of solar energy products and solutions that dramatically lower the cost of solar power.

This round of the SunShot Incubator Program is for both hardware and non-hardware solutions that reduce the cost of systems that convert solar energy into electric potential.

GOV. MALLOY: SPECIAL INCENTIVES AVAILABLE TO ASSIST THOSE FACING ENERGY-RELATED RECONSTRUCTION COSTS FROM STORM SANDY

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that $3 million in additional energy efficiency incentives are now available for residents and businesses replacing furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters and refrigerators as a result of damage from Storm Sandy.“Many of the homes and businesses affected by Storm Sandy will be replacing damaged appliances, and heating and cooling equipment,” Governor Malloy said. “This unfortunate situation does, however, provide a unique opportunity to help property owners improve, rather than just repair, their properties by making energy efficiency investments that will save them money for years to come.”

The incentives will apply for replacement of equipment with more energy efficient models between October 29 and December 31. The deadline for applications for the incentives is December 31, 2012.

In addition to these incentives, Governor Malloy also announced that special funding is available, in the form of low-cost financing for eligible equipment with optional on-utility-bill repayment for customers who make energy efficiency upgrades in equipment or insulation and air sealing while renovating or reconstructing their residence or business as a result of storm damage.

A special team has been formed to assist home owners and businesses through the application process for these increased incentives and financing options.

“The first priority of people who suffered damage from the storm is getting their lives back to normal as quickly as possible,” the Governor said. “That’s why we have assembled a team of professionals from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, UI, CL&P, FEMA and the Disaster Relief Centers who are ready to work. Team members will provide information on rebate requirements and walk people through the process required to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Property owners will be also be encouraged to take advantage of the comprehensive energy efficiency assessments available under current programs and be allowed to do that after their lives are back to normal. Rebates connected to those audits will have extended qualification times.

Anyone seeking information about the various energy efficiency incentives or financing options available for replacing or repairing equipment should call the Connecticut Energy Information Line at 1-877-WISE-USE (1-877-947-3873).

The $3 million for increased rebates for more energy efficiency replacement equipment will be financed largely with energy efficiency funds made available through the Northeast Utilities/NStar merger settlement agreement.

The Governor said key partners in the effort to maximize awareness of this assistance and to provide information about the most efficient and cost effective options available to those who suffered storm damage are:

It is a type of adjustable speed drive that can be added to any in industrial, OEM, and HVAC motor driven system. They can be used in conjunction with control pumps, fans, Condenser fans, air handler motors, HVAC fans, and cooling towers.

Traditional heating and cooling systems often run at a higher speed then necessary which wastes considerable energy. Also frequent starting and stopping of motors and quick accelerations can lead to short life spans for equipment. VFD’s allows for gradual acceleration and less wear and tear on equipment. They work by alternating applied voltage by converting the fixed-frequency supply voltage to a continuously variable frequency, thereby allowing for adjustable motor speed. With variable frequency drives, motors can run at pre-determined speeds to optimize system requirements and energy efficiency performance on fans and pumps. Annual chiller energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by as much as 30% since lower compressor speed causes reduced wear. Systems can also be programmed to run at times that take advantage of off-peak energy rates.

VFD’s are programmable, quiet, have high motor efficiency and smooth performance. They come in a range of Horsepower and supply voltages. VFD’s are most effective when they are the ideal size and voltage for a specific motor. Digital displays and keypads make programming a breeze and the display can also monitor and show diagnostic information. Many models offer a remote display when the VFD is mounted interior of the equipment, as with many Rooftop air conditioners.

VFD can have an ROI of one year in the right application. They also are available for rebates and incentives the Connecticut and the local utilities. Incentives include the Energy Efficiency Fund Small Business Energy Advantage Program through the UI for a 0% interest rate for amounts between $500 – 100,000; as well as Energy Efficiency Fund Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Program for varying Incentives that incorporate two electric end-uses with at least 15% of project energy savings.

Controlled Air, Inc. uses Eaton Variable Frequency Drives under the Johnson Controls label and we can provide a 3-year warranty when one of our trained techs start and test them. Often ABB VFD’s are used because they are better known. We feel that the Eaton VFD’s offer a competitive solution in cost, quality, easy of operation, support, and warranty.
